Two New York based artists and their books.

The Stockholm based Loyal Gallery and Nieves collaborated to publish a new zine with the works of Eddie Martinez. It was released in the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at the gallery. For this little book, Martinez completed an exclusive group of drawings on hotel stationery from the infamous Chateau Marmont hotel here in LA.
Chateau Suite Drawings, 2008, 16 Pages, 14 x 20 cm, b/w Photocopy, ed. of 150. $8.

While browsing Loyal, check also their own publications. There are quite some gems to be found. Every time I find myself in a book store, I want to get “Loyal and his band“, the gorgeous book celebrating the five years of existence of the mag and the space. Some of the featured artists are true Flog’s favorites: Matt Leines, Jules de Balincourt, Misaki Kawai, Wes Lang, Eddie Martinez, Yun-Fei Ji, Taylor McKimens, Jockum Nordstrom, Mamma Andersson, Stephen Shore, Miroslav Tichy, Brian Belott.

In other Martinez’s news, make sure to see the group exhibition he curated at Werkstätte Gallery in NY. Glass Houses include Derek Aylward, Patrick Brennan, John Copeland, Denise Kupferschmidt, Liz Markus, Sam Moyer, Sara Murphy, Ryan Schneider, and Jade Townsend and runs through August 2nd.

Paul Mpagi Sepuya has a new, and gorgeous book out. Some 112 pages of photographs published by envoy in NY and designed by Circle & Square.
The volume includes texts by Nicholas Boston, Dean Sameshima, David Velasco, as well as Paul himself.
Each book is numbered and signed from an edition of 1000.

If you are interested to get your book specially handled by Paul, meet the artist at Printed Matter on July 26th for a special book release. I sure wish I was there for my special lipstick mark.

Sepuya’s photographs will also be on view at The Center for Book Arts part of a large group exhibition, Artist as Publisher, curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud which opens tonight, July 9th and runs through September 13th.
His portrait of Chris (image below) was printed as the cover of the resurrected zine S.T.H., published by Scott Hug and Billy Miller, in 06. The original print will be included as part of the S.T.H. section of the exhibition.

Finally, while browsing Sepuya’s blog, I came across a post he made about Barcelona based artist, Rafael Castañer Sito Mujica who did a series of drawings based on found images, among which were Sepuya’s portraits (Hedi Slimane was another inspiration). Seeing this particular photograph of Alex under graphite is quite a pleasant sight.
