The Flog

Laser Magazine #3, Clare Grill, and a taste of the NY Art Book Fair.

While in New York, I made a point at stopping by the 4th annual Art Book Fair, hosted by PS1. With over 200 international presses, booksellers, antiquarian dealers, and independent artist/publishers the event was featuring a wide range of what is currently being published. And one could wander between xeroxed-on-site black and white zines and out-of-print, first edition handle-with-gloves-only beauties.

The fair also became a delicious opportunity to finally break the virtual bound created by the piles of e-mail correspondence and shake hands with a few of my favorite publishers, Capricious, Seems, Nieves, yes, it was good to meet you.

Expect a full post on the fair soon.

Read also this interview between Paddy Johnson of Art Fag City and AA Bronson, executive director of the New York institution Printed Matter and the NY Art Book Fair.

Benjamin Sommerhalder, the man behind the reading ghost.

I had been keeping an eye on this book by Taylor McKimens, This Kind of Livin’, 2008 for a while and brought it back home along with a lovely and sturdy canvas bag Nieves produced on the occasion of the fair. Buy it.

Also coming up, are my shots from the studio visit with New York based painter Clare Grill. I was really thrilled to finally see more of her work in person and hear about her process and inspirations.

Clare also offered me one of her books, What You’re Told which was published by Little Paper Planes in conjunction with the Summer show, Buddy System at Rare Device in San Francisco.

I love how the zine combines super close-ups of her paintings with enigmatic family snapshots.

To wrap up this print related post, I am glad to announce that Laser Magazine is now in its third issue (check the previous flogged ones), which is really good, because I was giving them trouble for not going forward with the updates. Plus, this edition comes with a bunch of faded t-shirts and let’s just say that I love the purple one.
