The Flog

Edition 06. Kelly Kleinschrodt.

I believe in my own obsessions, in the beauty of the car crash, in the peace of the submerged forest, in the excitements of the deserted holiday beach, in the elegance of automobile graveyards, in the mystery of multi-storey car parks, in the poetry of abandoned hotels.

- J.G. Ballard, What I Believe, 1984. Read it in its entirety.

Coming back to Los Angeles has always felt significantly foreign and deeply familiar. Every time I step foot in the city, my body has to readjust to its intonations and its hypnotic pace, to these new noises of traveling metal and to the warm breath of the orange trees. And yes, after these last months spent battling with Winter, I am actually joyously embracing the hot exhalations.

To celebrate this return, I invited Los Angeles based artist Kelly Kleinschrodt. For this edition, she submitted a series of photograms ironically carrying the seal of the city. Following up on her current experimentation with the photographic medium, Kleinschrodt has been playing with large sheets of mylar to “lift” surfaces and elements from her surroundings; in this particular series, she collected broken and splattered glass from parking lots, subsequently bringing the found residues to the darkroom to create these mesmerizing and unique plates.
I love how the scale of these familiar elements become mystified, eventually turning into radiating galaxies or magnified blood samples.

Edition 05. Susane Bergstaedt.

When I knew that I would be back in Berlin, I wrote to Susane. She is the first person I met after arriving in this city and her welcoming was the warmest. Traveling become so much more refined and precious when the memories of encounters last long after they took place, then reshape into new exchanges. It’s now my pleasure to welcome this Berlin based painter to the Collection.

The title of this painting refers to an island in the Red Sea that the French explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his team perused in the 1960s. They discovered that there were no life on it except for large quantities of a certain type of crabs running up and down incessantly.

Edition 04. Ariel Reichman.

I am still in Berlin for a few more days, cheerfully trying to survive its capricious weather and its uneven glassy sidewalks.
There will be a few changes here on The Flog and I am really excited to be launching them soon. Let’s just throw out the hint that it will be another great trans-Atlantic slash Continental collaboration.

Back in the Spring of last year, I started shooting studio visits again and was invited to step inside Ariel’s studio here in Berlin.
I was drawn to his work due to both its intimate and its formal aesthetic. Heavy personal narratives were warmly buzzing from everywhere and yet it also felt like the cold report of a detective was being waved at me, as if the correspondent had solely lined up the facts of one’s life. It was darkly intriguing.
This photograph carries the same weight to me. Within the ongoing process of his practice, it represents the space where the political and the intimate connects, somewhere between photography, video, performance, and life.

Edition 03. Jessica Minckley.

Before introducing the third artist in the collection, I am delighted to announce that The Beholder is now hosting the Art Collection by The Flog. I am really excited and honored to be collaborating with Suzanne Shade who graciously made space for the pieces I have already presented and for the ones scheduled to appear every week. Thank you for your continued support.

Like a romantic and premonitory episode, this diptych by Jessica Minckley seems to be carrying the melancholia of my current surroundings. As I am writing this from Berlin, I can almost see the same repetitive marks, the faded touches and the colored scratches that she applied to the intimacy of the format, surfacing on the walls of the city and in the color of the winter air.

Minckley works in an array of mediums, from works on paper, to painting and installation. Her practice resonates within the familiar, the self, and the crisis and sorrows that accompany such language.

Edition 02. Alika Cooper.

For this second edition, I invited the second artist I ever interviewed for the site back in November 2006, Alika Cooper.
She created a triptych featuring the iconic Grace Jones, reminiscent of her infamous performance of 1985 at the Paradise Garage in New York, when Keith Haring collaborated with Jones on her costume. Haring painted her body in tribal patterns characteristic of his stylized white designs and fitted her with an elaborate assemblage of pieces of rubber, plastic sheen, and metal, created by Haring and David Spada.

Edition 01. Eric Yahnker.

I am delighted to present a new feature on this site, the curated art collection of The Flog.

In April of 2005, I started this website as a way to connect with a city I was to call home for the next five years, and counting.
After having featured more than a thousand artists, at exhibitions, art fairs, and inside their studios, I have decided to propose their works for sale, directly to you.

Every Wednesday, one artist I have talked about previously on these pages will be featured with a piece of art available for purchase. This work will have been created specifically for The Flog and will solely be procurable online.

At the end of the year, a printed volume will be offered which will be gathering all of the pieces made available on this site.

This is a project I have been thinking about for a while now and I am really excited by its promises. Every artist I have contacted have shown much enthusiasm and talent in proposing me original work that I can’t hardly wait to show you what they have been hiding. We are now at a point where the art world needs to embrace alternative ways of producing and experiencing Art, and also needs to accept that significant works of Art can truly surface from everywhere. I believe that the internet is a worthwhile and critical space to filter and curate this vast production.

Welcome to this new chapter of The Flog and enjoy the Art, as always.
