The Flog.

The upcoming days in review.

While I am waiting for the new Queens Of The Stone Age’s new album to come out June 12th, I am listening to some of their old tunes on repeat.. You can’t ever get tired of Song For The Dead. You can pre-order Era Vulgaris on Insound here, might even get to you before June 12th!

The weekend is right in front with a bunch of exciting events.

Tonight go check Dance To The Underground at the Abandoned Bank (403 W. 8th St., Los Angeles, CA), an AIDS benefit Art show (and dance party!).

The show will be featuring twenty two young artists, most of them undergrads at various universities in the Los Angeles area, including USC, UCLA, Pepperdine , Cal Arts, and Art Center. Also included in the show are older, more established artists outside of the university system. All of our artists have donated their artwork, which will be sold in a silent auction.
All Proceeds from this event will go to AIDS Lifecycle. The gallery will be open from 5 to 9pm then the party starts at 10pm. RSVP here.

Also on Friday is Brodeo at New Image Art Gallery bringing together Bast, Cleon Peterson, Cody Hudson, Date Farmers, David Ellis, Eddie Martinez, Eric White, Evan Hecox, and Kelsey Brookes.

Monsieur Hecox have a new beautiful print for sale on Arkitip, a 3 color silk screen print on Neenah Environment paper, 16 x 20 In. (40.64 x 50.8 cm) in ed. of 100. $95.

I also received yesterday a sweet card announcement for Travis Millard’s first solo book! Congrats Fudge. The book will be published by Narrow Books here in LA and will contain his art and comics, including many pieces previously only published by hand in small batches at the artist’s studio. A great book in perspective! While browsing Millard’s website, I read that he is currently part of an exciting traveling exhibition organized by the Hayward in London, called Cult Fiction. It’s bringing together a lot of fabulous artists.. including Stéphane Blanquet, Daniel Clowes, Liz Craft, Robert Crumb, Julie Doucet, Marcel Dzama, Yoshitomo Nara, Raymond Pettibon, Jon Pylypchuk, David Shrigley, and more! Man what a list.

The show opened last month at the New Image Art Gallery Walsall and will travel around the UK for the upcoming year.

The Orb and The Art Corps.

Freeways are empty at 6 am.

Last weekend was grandiose. It’s not that often that New-Yorkers, in their most sumptuous attire would fly to LA just for the beauty of it, or for the grand opening of hot new galleries in Culver City and oh, that The Orb would be chilling at the Disney Concert Hall at 4am. The rest of my sunday was pretty much spent recovering from 6 hours of electronic music…

Thank you LA for not falling asleep at midnight like you are use to.

Marnie Weber at Rosamund Felsen Gallery.

Marnie Weber: Ghost Love, The Spirit Girls @Rosamund Felsen Gallery (September 9 - October 8, 2005)

Marnie Weber will also perform The Spirit Girls, Songs that Never Die at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, October 22nd.

Music Performances at Il Corral.

Last night was wild, furry and noisy. Matthew and I went to Il Corral, a noise and sound art venue, to enjoy a night of decadence between smelly couches and a vw-fireworks sound machine.. Grace’s Amazing Kitty Cat Band, Rose For Bohdan, Ultra Boyz and Friends Forever were playing. Ultra Boyz made a clean and powerful performance and gently prepared me for the outdoor luminescent feat from Friends Forever.. Of course you had to be there.

I also grabbed a flyer for Salient Lock-Up: The Second Annual Five Day Performance that will take place at the Il Corral, open 24 hours, between September 3rd and 7th… It sounded quite mysterious: “two people-two rules: No pre-composition, no leaving” No leaving? Yes, 24hours of madness. I can’t promise the quality but who would want to miss a 4 am performance? For more info, schedule and the online sign up click here.

__Salient Lockup is a five day performance in which two collaborators are “locked in a room” under the constraints of only two rules: they cannot pre-compose their material, and they cannot leave for five days. The idea of the piece is that members of the art community will come in during the five days for specified times and contribute to the ongoing performance / installation with their own ideas and talents. People in the mediums of film, dance, music, puppetry, fine art, and writing are welcome; the five-day piece serves as an experiment in art as well as a spiritual endurance performance for those who choose to stick it out for the full length of time.
