The Flog.

Cornelia O’Donovan and Beau Labute.

Tiny Showcase invited London based artist Cornelia O’Donovan to collaborate on their next limited edition of 100 prints. The sale starts tonight at 7:30 EST pm and I am curious to see which piece will be featured.

Canadian artist Beau Labute published his first zine with Nieves. Night Mewves looks quite dark yet playful. Love it.
Specs: 24 Pages, 14 x 20 cm, b/w Photocopy, Edition of 150. $8.

Fur for LACMA.

Following up on the announcement from the New York Times (via C-Monster) that LACMA isn’t getting Eli Broad’s collection, may I suggest this fur life jacket (via Lux Lotus) to be distributed to the museum committee. Nothing says “I am not embarrassed, I am only fabulously sinking” better than this Meret Oppenheim-inspired piece of surrealism.

Miranda July for The Thing Quarterly.

THE THING is a quarterly periodical in the form of an object.

For the first issue, the publication invited LA based artist Miranda July to create an everyday and shippable object that somehow incorporates text - which will be common to all issues.

The idea is rather exciting and for $120 (+ $40 shipping within the US) you are committed to 4 issues and the collaborations of Anne Walsh, Kota Ezawa and Trisha Donnelly.
Although this project already started last August with a delicious sweatshop free wrapping party at Southern Exposure in San Francisco, you still have until October 26th to subscribe and receive the first issue.

Check also this project, The Present Group in the same vein, yet not as aesthetically appealing.

Kelly Lynn Jones for Tiny Showcase.

Kelly Lynn Jones recollaborated with Tiny Showcase for a new limited edition print to be released later on this evening. Check the site and act fast, those declicious pieces usually run out quickly.

Ooga Booga’s Three Year Anniversary.

Ooga Booga is officially three years old! This Sunday, July 29th, come celebrate the Chinatown space with flows of good sounds and good sights.

(Left image is the party flyer. Right image is Liz Craft, A Real Mother For Ya. Signed and numbered poster edition of 1000, by LA artist Liz Craft for her London exhibition in 2002. On sale for $10 at Ooga Booga.)

Hammer Bash and Ooga Booga Party.

Tonight is the Holy Hammer Bash!, a free and good excuse to wander in their delightful library, hang out in the patio with happy drinks, and see (or re-see) Vija Celmins: A Drawings Retrospective, which will close the same night.

Also taking place tonight is the closing party for Susan Cianciolo’s window installation at Ooga Booga in Chinatown. In addition, there will be a performance by Abe Vigoda and tunes dropped by Kate Hall. 8pm.

New Publications.

For their 39th issue, Arkitipcollaborated with triple-hype store colette to celebrate the parisian store’s 10th birthday.
From the magazine’s press release:
__To mark their first decade, colette commissioned over 90 artists to create original works that expressed their view of the new year. The proceeds from the sale of which will benefit the WWF.
This special issue edition of Arkitip will be an extension of this very rare exhibition by displaying a substantial variety of these works, allowing them to be seen worldwide via our magazine distribution. Arkitip was charged with the difficult task to choose a sample of these artists for display in the issue. This exhibition will constitute the entire Arkitip contributor section making the assemblage very comprehensive.

David Ostrowski has been working on a new project entitled 1981er which operates as an online magazine.
The first issue is up featuring a bunch of ladies building up David’s canvases, side by side with David’s own work on canvas.

(All images David Ostrowski, left is Alexa, along values, possessions, profit and success, 2006, oil, acrylic and lacquer on canvas, 78.74 x 59.06 inch. Right is Dana, along dead for five minutes just to find out what’s better, 2006, oil, acrylic and lacquer on canvas, 78.74 x 59.06 inch)

New brilliant Ruby online. This time the issue is filled with gems.
Contributors include David Capra, Justin Kelly, Emmanuelle Villard, Kobi Israel, Raphaël Neal and William Lamson, among others.

The Flog presents the 2006 Christmas List.

Ahh Christmas! It was fun to put together this sort of happy consumerism list last year, so I did it again. You will mostly find books and prints but also some crafty bits and absurd collectibles. Original art is often difficult to find online but I gave it a go with various pieces I could find and liked, and that sometimes, saw in person. Yet, grab your shoes and go to your favorite galleries to purchase original art.

I tried to compile items created by Los Angeles based artists or publications where LA artists were mentioned (*LA*) but as you will see, I went beyond the frontiers of the city.

Finally, I didn’t put any of the pieces I have featured at the gallery - because all of them would have appeared! ah - but don’t hesitate to head over there. You might find a couple of gems.

So, once again, enjoy the lèche-vitrine and of course, my mailing address will be given upon request to the generous ones, or the ones in love. C’est selon.

Flog First Anniversary.

The Flog just went through its first anniversary this weekend!
One year that I feed these pages with photographs and comments on what Los Angeles has to offer. As a foreigner, building this site certainly helped me feel more attached to this city, its atmosphere and fluctuations.
Thanks to all of you who wrote me with crazy words and thanks for reading. I hope that the few seconds you each spend on here inspire you. Let’s see how it goes now.

I celebrated this extravagant anniversary by working on my own projects, and I am pleased to announce that my book of drawings, The Anonymous Anatomy is finally sewn together and ready to be shipped.
You can have a look here for more info about it.
