Ruby Magazine issue 22.

This new issue of Ruby is once again a sweet little piece of digital time.
From the housing series by Los Angeles and Tel Aviv based photographer Yanai Toister – who showed at Sandroni.Rey this past May/June – to the installations from Reed Barrow – even if they may make you think of Mai-Thu Perret – to Cody Hoyt stunning series of prints.

Back in Los Angeles!

Yes, I am back. Apologies for the lack of updates but you will think that internet connections would be made available on site for the art fairs goers, and yet, you would be wrong. Where I was, at the Zoo Art Fair, in the fabulous building of the Royal Academy of Arts, the gold key to access the wireless internet connection was sporadically given away, to Ô just a few lucky souls, and by that I mean, well, the press. Server issues so I have heard…

Now that I am back, of course I am busy preparing for the upcoming show at the space and compiling shots I took before leaving Los Angeles and the few I took while in London.

I promise, Monday will be a new start.

The Collective Body, LA Artists in Czech Republic.

Cathy Akers gave me the heads up on this upcoming show, The Collective Body, curated by Kristen Raizada, which opens October 6th at Galerie Califa (Horaždovice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic) and will gather a great amount of LA based artists.
The curator’s statement gives you a good insight on the themes carrying the show together.

Galeria Califa was opened last June by California-born artist Barbara Benish in the town’s chateau (!). Really, in Europe, where else would you want to have a show/open a gallery!?

The participating artists are Cathy Akers, CamLab, Jocelyn Foye, Eva Kotatkova, Dominik Lang, Elana Mann, Jeff Ostergren, Rafani, Jean Robison, Tomas Svoboda, and Sayon Syprasoeuth.

Patriot Acts, launch at the Habeas Lounge.

LA based artist and activist Linda Pollack sent me the announcement for the launch of the Habeas Lounge, located in the 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica.

Sunday, October 7th, from 4 to 6 pm, come inaugurate this new Salon with a Bill of Rights Read Aloud (and other at risk portions of the United States Constitution) with Professor Allan Ides of Loyola Law School and others on hand, to answer questions live, in real time.
Concluding the read aloud will be a short improvised reflection in movement and spoken word on the material generated, by dancer – choreographer – writer Simone Forti.

Patriot Acts is a six-months series of events and began last June “to support civic processes, that brings together artists, lawyers, activists, scholars and other civilians.” The program marked the 18th Street Arts Center’s theme for the year, entitled The Future of Nations which is intentionally tied to the Presidential election in November 2008, and many of the issues which will determine the direction and future of our nation will be raised and examined in our exhibitions.

A Patriot Acts group arts exhibition will open at the gallery of the Arts Center in January 2008.

Peter Rogiers – October Flog Header.

For this month’s masthead, I chose a shot of Peter Rogier’s piece Sandman, 2006-2007, epoxy, polyester, iron, polyurethane-varnish and paint, 128×158x135.9 cm (50.4×62.2×53.5 inches) which is part of Slagroom, the artist’s first solo show at Roberts & Tilton, on view until October 6th.

I first came across Rogiers’s work when he had two of his sculptures part of the group show Sea Change at Roberts & Tilton back in September 2006. I was captivated by his textured strokes or how he uses the medium, excavating, creating wrinkles and waves throughout the materials.
The pieces currently on view here in LA all convey intense emotions. Each of his figures seem petrified from some uncanny curse, their distorted rictus and their absurd exclamations mocking the visitor. Yet, Rogiers’s use of bold and sort of ingenuous colors relieve the whole experience. I think that the combination is fabulous.

I haven’t found a lot of information regarding his new projects, yet it looks like he will be at the Cultuurcentrum of Mechelen, Belgium this upcoming May.
